Distance changes what you can do, not how much you can help. The three things that travel well are lighting, information, and preparation for the visits you do make.
What actually works remotely
- Lighting. Motion-sensing plug-in lights need no installation and no wiring. They can be posted and plugged in by anyone.
- A phone that works for them. Large buttons, loud ringer, and your number as the first speed dial. This beats a smartphone they will not use.
- One point of local contact. A neighbour who has your number is worth more than any device.
Make each visit a measuring visit
Every trip, take five numbers and put them in your phone. They make every remote purchase afterwards possible:
- Bathroom doorway clear width, door open
- Toilet bowl shape and floor-to-seat height
- Tub wall width
- Number and height of steps at the entrance
- Where the studs are around the tub and toilet
On monitoring
Cameras and alert systems are heavily marketed to families in exactly your position. Before buying anything with a monthly fee: check what happens when the internet drops, what the cancellation terms are, and whether your parent will actually wear or use it. A device they resent is a device that ends up in a drawer.
Get an OT assessment booked
An occupational therapist visiting the home in person is the single best substitute for you being there. Ask their doctor for a referral.
