Most families start by furnishing a bedroom. The bedroom is the easy part. The decision that shapes everything else is which bathroom they will use at night, and whether they can reach it without stairs.
Decide these three first
- Which bathroom, at 3am. If the answer involves stairs, everything else is secondary to solving that.
- How far bed to toilet. Pace it. Over about thirty feet, plan on a bedside commode as well.
- Whether the route can be lit. Continuous low-level light beats a bright switch they have to find.
Then the bedroom
- Bed height so feet sit flat on the floor when seated — around 20–23″ to the top of the mattress for most people. Risers raise a low bed; a lower frame fixes a high one.
- A firm chair with arms. Soft low seating is very hard to get out of.
- A clear path on both sides of the bed if help may be needed.
- Somewhere for a phone and a light within arm’s reach of the pillow.
Bed rails carry real entrapment risk if they leave a gap between the rail and the mattress. Choose one made for the bed, fit it exactly to the maker’s instructions, and check for gaps. A rail intended for a hospital bed does not belong on a domestic divan.
What can wait
Redecorating, wardrobes, en-suite conversions. Get the night route safe in week one; the rest will look different once you have watched them actually live in the space.
