The stove
An auto shut-off device fits between the stove and the supply and cuts power or gas after a set period. It is the single highest-value change in this situation, and it does not require anyone to remember anything.
Doors and going out
- A simple chime or door alarm on exterior doors tells you the door opened. It does not lock anyone in.
- Keep the route to the bathroom obvious and lit; confusion at night is often just not being able to find the door.
- A clearly labelled photo of a familiar face beside the phone helps more than a device.
Deadlocking exterior doors from the inside creates a fire risk and a serious dignity problem. Alarms tell you what happened; locks create a new hazard. If exit risk has reached the point where locks feel necessary, that is a conversation for their care team, not a hardware purchase.
Water temperature
Set the water heater to 120°F. Reduced judgement about hot water is common, and the burn margin at 140°F is only a few seconds.
Simplify rather than add
Fewer objects, clearer surfaces, consistent places for keys and glasses. Adding gadgets usually adds confusion. Removing clutter almost always helps.
