Grab Bars for a Fiberglass Shower With No Studs

This is the single most common bathroom in American housing built after 1975, and it is the hardest one to put a grab bar in. The surround is a thin moulded skin with an air gap behind it. A screw driven into that skin is holding onto nothing.
The bar and its anchors together must hold 250 lbf pulled downward and outward. Fiberglass alone cannot. Something structural has to be behind it, or the load has to be spread across a much wider area than a screw thread.
First: find out what is actually back there
Tap along the surround with a knuckle. A hollow ring means air gap. A dull thud means the panel is bedded against something — often mortar or a stud. Then use a stud finder on the surround; many will read through a thin panel and tell you where the framing runs. Mark every stud you find with tape before you decide anything.

Sealing matters as much as anchoring
Every hole through a shower surround is a water path into the wall cavity. Water gets into the framing, the framing softens, and in two years the anchor that tested fine is sitting in wet wood. Bed each flange in silicone and run a bead around it after tightening. This is not cosmetic.
About clamp-on and suction bars
Suction-cup bars sell extremely well and are not weight-bearing. They are a balance cue for someone already steady on their feet — not something to catch a fall, and not something to pull up on. If the person needs to put real weight on it, a suction bar is the wrong product at any price.
Clamp-on tub rails are different: they bolt to the tub wall itself and are genuinely load-rated, but they only work on a tub with a suitable rim, and they do nothing for a walk-in shower.
What to measure before you order
- Distance between the studs you found, centre to centre — this decides bar length.
- Surround thickness at a corner, if you can see one.
- Tub wall width, if a clamp-on rail is in play.
Bar lengths are sold in fixed sizes. Knowing your stud spacing first is the difference between one order and three.
