Grab Bar Keeps Coming Loose? Here Is What Went Wrong

A grab bar does not gradually loosen because of the bar. It loosens because of what is behind the wall. If you can rock it, stop using it today — a bar that moves is worse than no bar, because it invites the weight it cannot take.

Stop using it now

Tell whoever uses that bathroom, in words, that the bar is not to be leaned on until it is fixed. People trust a bar because it is there. Tape a towel over it if that is what it takes.

Work out what it is anchored to

Take the flange cover off. What you find explains everything:

  • Wood screws into a stud. Solid wood shows in the hole. If it still loosened, the screws were too short or the stud edge was clipped.
  • Plastic wall plugs. The commonest cause. Plastic plugs are for picture frames. They creep under repeated load and were never rated for a person.
  • Nothing but drywall or fiberglass. The screw is holding in a 12mm skin. It was always going to fail.
  • Toggle bolts. Correct in principle, but on a thin fiberglass surround the toggle crushes the panel over time unless there is backing.

What to do in each case

Into a stud, but loose. Move it. Do not re-drive screws into a chewed hole. Shift the bar so both flanges catch stud centres, and use lag screws long enough to reach at least 1.5″ into solid wood.

Plastic plugs. Take them out entirely. Either relocate to studs, or fit anchors specifically rated for grab bars — the type that clamps against the back of the wall rather than gripping the hole.

Fiberglass or acrylic surround. This is the one people get wrong twice. The panel flexes; it is not a structural surface. The proper fix is a backing plate behind the panel, which usually means access from the other side. Where that is not possible, a rated hollow-wall grab bar anchor spreads load across a wider area — but it has to be rated for a grab bar, not a generic toggle.

What “holds 250 pounds” actually means

The 250 lbf figure is not the weight of the user. It is a load test in the worst direction — a sudden downward pull from someone falling. Somebody who weighs 150 pounds can put far more than 250 pounds through a bar in the half second they lose their footing. The bar is fine. The anchor is what you are buying.

When not to fix it yourself

If the wall is tiled over cement board, if the surround is cracked, or if you cannot find studs where the bar needs to go, this is a job for someone who can open the wall. A handyman visit costs less than a fall.
