The Living Room: The Chair Is the Whole Problem

People spend more waking hours in this room than any other, and most of the difficulty comes down to one object: the chair.
What makes a chair possible to get out of
- Height. Feet flat on the floor with knees at roughly a right angle. Too low and the legs cannot generate the push.
- Firmness. A soft seat swallows the hips and removes the leverage.
- Arms. Arms that extend to the front edge, so the hands can push down at the moment of standing.
Cheap fixes before expensive ones
| Fix | Adds | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Firm cushion or board under the existing cushion | 2–4″ | Free to cheap, try first |
| Chair leg risers | 2–5″ | Must be rated and fitted to all four legs |
| Different chair | — | Often the real answer |
| Lift chair | — | Only after the above; check doorway width before ordering |
Furniture risers must be rated for the load and fitted to every leg. A chair on three risers and one book is a chair that will tip.
The route out of the room
Clear a path wide enough for a walker from the chair to the door, and to the bathroom. Coffee tables and footstools sitting in that path are the classic living-room trip hazard.
Light
A lamp reachable from the chair without standing. Reaching across a dark room for a switch is a fall in the making.
