Rollators: What They Are For, and How to Choose One

What a rollator is for. It rolls, so it cannot be leaned on the way a standard walker can — push weight into it and it runs away, which is what the hand brakes exist to stop. If someone needs to take load off a leg through their arms, a rollator is the wrong device and a walker is the right one.
The distinction is structural: a walker is lifted and planted, a rollator stays on the ground and moves.
A rollator is a wheeled frame with hand brakes and a seat. It is for someone who can carry their own weight but runs out of balance, or out of breath, or out of confidence — and who needs somewhere to sit down halfway along the shop.
That is a different person from the one a walker suits, and getting the two mixed up is the most consequential mistake in this category.
Rollator or walker
Choose a walker if they need to unload a leg — after a hip or knee operation, or with a fracture that cannot bear weight. The frame is lifted, planted, then walked into. It is slow, and slow is the point.
Choose a rollator if the legs work but the balance does not, or if distance is the limit rather than strength. Wheels mean no lifting, which means a normal walking rhythm and much less fatigue.
If you are not sure which applies, that is a question for their physiotherapist or occupational therapist rather than for a product page — it depends on what their legs can currently take, which nobody can judge from a description.
The three measurements that decide it
Handle height. Grips level with the wrist crease when the arms hang relaxed. Every rollator adjusts; almost none arrive set right.
The doorway. Rollators are wider than people expect and the narrowest point of a house is rarely the front door. An open hinged door steals about two inches of the frame width, so a 28″ door gives around 26″ of real clearance. Measure the gap, not the door: the clear width a walker or rollator actually needs, and if it is already too tight, the ways to get those inches back.
Wheel size. Bigger wheels cross thresholds and pavement; smaller ones turn tighter indoors. The pivot point is around the half-inch threshold height that needs no ramp, because that is where small wheels start to catch.
Best for most people

If most of the walking is outdoors
All-Terrain Rollator, 8″ Wheels
Worth considering when the daily walk involves grass, gravel or broken pavement. Bigger wheels ride over what stops a standard rollator; the cost is a wider frame, so measure the doorways first.

The seat is for resting, not for sitting at
A rollator seat sits higher than a dining chair and it is on wheels. That makes it a perch for catching breath, not a chair to do anything from. Nobody should be sitting on a rollator to peel vegetables at the counter, and nobody should be sitting on one without the brakes locked.
It also means the seat height is not the number to match to their armchair or the toilet. Those belong in the 17–19″ transfer band; a rollator seat is deliberately above it so that standing back up is a short push rather than a climb.
Which model, by situation
Most of the real decisions have their own page, because each one turns on a measurement rather than an opinion.
