The reason for the range is transfers. Moving sideways between two surfaces of equal height is far easier and safer than lifting the body up or dropping it down, and every inch of mismatch costs effort.
Match these three

- Toilet seat height
- Shower seat height
Get them within an inch or two of each other and the whole bathroom becomes easier.
Seat inside, or bench across the wall?
A shower chair sits inside the enclosure and suits someone who can step in. A transfer bench spans the tub wall — two legs outside, two inside — so they sit down outside and slide across without ever stepping over. For anyone unsteady stepping over a tub wall, the bench is the safer product.
The tub wall width (the bench must straddle it with its outside legs on solid floor) and the weight rating — typically 250–300 lb, with bariatric versions higher. A bench that does not sit flat is a bench that tips.
